Embarking on a podcast feels a bit like jumping into the deep end without knowing how to swim. It's terrifying, exhilarating, and honestly, a bit of a wild ride. That's exactly what it was like for my mom, sister, and me as we launch "The Mother You Know. The Woman You Don’t." This podcast explores the intricate relationships between mothers and daughters and their impact on our identities. We talk about the good, the bad. The beautiful, the ugly. The perfect and not-so-perfect in regards to this complex relationship.
How It All Began
The idea of starting a podcast had been floating around in my family for a while. My sister had been nurturing the idea and even had the perfect name for over a year. I was itching for a new project to sink my teeth into, and my mom was keen on learning something new. So, the stage was set for something exciting—we just didn't know what yet!
Initially, I thought we'd dive into the world of true crime and all that that entails. Because who doesn't love talking about true crime? But sharing and celebrating the powerful stories of women works too!
The Scary Adventure Begins
Deciding to talk about mothers and daughters was a natural choice, but not without its fears. None of us have any real experience with podcasting. There are so many unknowns—figuring out the tech, understanding how to engage an audience, and even just getting comfortable speaking into a microphone.
The learning curve is steep. We fumbled through our first recordings, grappling with editing software and occasionally forgetting to hit the record button even listening to the original recordings and deciding they weren't good enough, so they were trashed. But with each mistake, we learn a little more, and slowly, it is starting to feel less like a foreign language and more like our new favorite hobby.
Deepening Family Bonds
One of the unexpected joys of this journey has been the deeper connection with my mom and sister. Even though we've always been close, working on this podcast has opened up new avenues of conversation and brought us closer. It's different when you sit down with the intention to explore the layers of your relationships and personal histories. Every episode, we uncover new insights and share laughter (and sometimes a few tears), which has been incredibly special.
Expanding Our Circle
Interviewing other women has added another layer of richness to our podcast. Each guest brings a unique story that resonates with our theme of complex family dynamics and personal growth. These conversations are not only empowering for our listeners but for us as well. They remind us of the shared experiences and challenges that bind us together as women.
Moving Forward
We are only getting started but these initial fears seem like a necessary part of our journey. They push us out of our comfort zones and bring us to a place where we can share, learn, and connect in ways we never imagined. Starting "The Mother You Know. The Woman You Don't" has been more than just starting a podcast; it's been about growing as individuals and as a family.
So, for anyone out there thinking about starting their own podcast—go for it! It might be scary, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Dive into the stories or topics that ignite your passion. It’s a journey that can lead to unexpected and fulfilling destinations.
Well said my beautiful niece. Love you so much and Alisha and I had a wonderful time with all of you. What an adventure you are on.
